The long history of exchanges, made possible above all thanks to the close geographical proximity between the two countries, has allowed a gradual development of the Italian presence on Tunisian territory, which has now reached more than 900 companies, employing 70,000 people in the textile, electrical, electronics, mechanics, agri-food and footwear industries, as Abdelbasset Ghanmi, Director General of FIPA, the Tunisian Agency for the Promotion of Foreign Investments, told Africa e Affari.
In addition to the considerable Italian presence, the Director underlined how “Tunisia today also represents a gateway to other European markets, to the Middle East and to African markets” acknowledging much of the credit to Comesa, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, and to the implementation of the Continental Free Trade Area, which makes Tunisia “a privileged place for Italian companies seeking operations in the rest of the African continent”.
